WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Plenty of kids were out in the water in Wrightsville Beach for the Surfers Healing camp to catch some waves.
For the 13th year, the camp hit the waves at Wrightsville Beach. Surfers Healing helps kids living with Autism to adjust and embrace the ocean. For some children, this was a return to the camp while for others, this was a first time adventure. It was also an experience for the parents.
“A little terrifying for the first time seeing my daughter with somebody different on a surfboard. I have never taken her on the board what so ever, but it was awesome. Like, just seeing her being comfortable with somebody else and just having a good time, being in the water,” parent Dirk Mattin said.
“They get him up on the surfboard and he’s just so comfortable and so proud of himself when he stands up on that surfboard. And it’s just such an experience for him We’re so proud of him and he’s so proud of himself. It’s the main thing. It gives him such confidence,” parent Maxie McGlohon said.
Today wasn’t the only day to catch some waves. There will be another session tomorrow for military families.
