FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — The sand and surf of the beaches this weekend offered up inspiration for some young surfers. The local chapter of Surfers Healing brought over 35 autistic youth into the water and taught them to surf; some for the very first time.
The group tries to provide the kids with a way to take a break from life and escape into the water, where they can enjoy riding a wave. It’s a very special event for the kids, and their parents.
“He popped up on his first board, rode all the way in and said, ‘Mom, I can surf,’” says Karen Gasquez. “I think it just translates into other parts of his life.”
Her son Tyler agrees, “I never rode a surfboard so long. It was awesome dude!”
Surfers Healing’s big event is still months away. They’ll host over 180 young surfers coming up on August 19th. If you’d like to learn more about the organization you can visit their website at: www.surfershealing.org
