WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Learning how to surf can be difficult the first time you step on a board, but it can be a life altering experience.
For some children with autism, they got a chance to catch some waves and build memories of a lifetime Monday.
“Look at all these happy surfers,” Dan Wargo, surfer, said. “Just look at them. It’s amazing
Surfers Healing is a program exposing kids with autism to the experience of surfing by bringing hundreds of kids to the coast.
“You don’t think your son or your daughter with Autism is going to be able to do anything like this ever,” John Pike, Surfers Healing Director said. “So people come from all over to ride the waves with professional surfers that can do it correctly.”
From distress to excitement, hundreds of kids get to experience surfing at the beach. An experience many parents say is life changing.
“My son loves to surf, he wants to do it all the time,” Mother Lisa Wargo said. “It has changed his life.”
Surfers Healing is celebrating its 20th anniversary, 12 of which have been spent here in Wrightsville Beach.
